J T,
People in Georgia plant sugarcane in March. you find that some of the eyes have aleady sprouted. This may make it a little more tedious to plant. Yes, some sprouts will get knocked off anyway, but you have no choice. Usually not so many sprouts get knocked off and you can still get a good stand. It really isn't that late to be planting as far as season goes. My plant cane has been sprouting up and getting killed back by freezes since about the first of January. Most of it is pushing back up now, but not all of it has come up yet--by any means. I am further South in latitude than you are, also. Your seasons run probably 2 weeks behind mine.
Also, as the weather is warmer when you plant, the cane will take off faster--much like planting vegetable seeds when the soil is warmer.......so plant away !
Richard
I often plant cane about April 1 whenever I can get some cane from Miami(small quantities of "new" varieties). It is dormant cane, however, but it is still late to be planting. It does okay. It MIGHT get a little bigger if planted earlier--but not much, I'd say. Cane REALLY grows fast in July and August.

Hey everybody, Do ya'll think it'll be ok to plant my sugar cane this late? I got my cane late last year and had to bank it. I live near Jackson, MS. The USDA handbook says no later than March 15. But it's been so wet and cold. I couldn't do anything. What do ya'll think?
