Your stalks should be at least 6 to 8 inches apart. If you leave them thick they will be about the size of a pencil. If you space them they can be as large as 2 inches in diameter depending on your soil and rainfall. You will get many times more juice.

Subject: [Syrupmakers] sorghum
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE GROWN SORGHUM. I PLANTED 3 LBS OF DALE TO AN
ACRE. IT ALL CAME UP AND IS 1.5 TO 2 FT TALL AND FAIRLY THICK. I HAVE BEEN
READING RECENT EMAILS ABOUT THE IMPORNTANCE OF THINNING SO I STARTED TO PULL UP
A FEW STALKS AND FOUND THAT MY ROOTS ARE TANGLED AND IT SEEMS THAT IF I
CONTINUE I WILL CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD. WE DON'T HAVE MUCH WIND UNLESS THERE IS
A HURRICANE HERE IN WEST CENTRAL LA. SO IT SHOULDN'T BLOW OVER. SHOULD I
LEAVE AS IS OR CUT SOME DOWN TO GROUND LEVEL INSTEAD OF PULLING IT. PLEASE ADVISE
PETER
