[Syrupmakers] cane mill bearings

JT, I got a machine shop to do mine ( Chatta. #14 ). They need to turn the journals ( shafts ) so you have a cylindrical surface. Your journals are almost certainly tapered ( unevenly worn ). With the machine work all the diameters are changed so it is very much a custom job. Many of these old mills are so badly worn it is very difficult to immagine what they looked like when new.
They can order thick enough stock so that they can machine the lugs on it so the bearings do not slide with the journal. I'm talking about a brass sleeve 3/4 inches thick. I couldn't believe how much like the original new bearings they looked. They will be even thicker than the original bearing.
I was able to build a relationship with a machinist and get him facinated with the project. I showed him some photos of the process so he had a feel for what I was doing. ( A jar of syrup might be useful too ). It took him "forever" to get it done because he worked on it when things were slow. He did a great job and kept the cost reasonable. I don't remember the cost. Seems like it was about $125. or so. That is a lot of machine work for that price !

OK, I'll try that. How much does that cost at a machine shop?
And the ottom bearing look like they're wedge shaped.(I can't remember what the right word is for that)
Can a machine shop make them also?
