JT,
I have seen other size chain's used, but I use a 100 gear chain on my #4 New Model Golden. I had the luck of my father working for a local paper mill at the time. He got the sprockets and chain after it was "in the scarp pile" if you know what I mean.
I use a 3.08 gear rear end from a 68 chev. and a transmission from 4 yard dump truck for a reduction gear. The sprockets are 5" and 24". I use the pto on my 755 JD to power the mill and I have never had a problem with grinding my cane.
I know that I turn mine a little fast but I turn the one I have about 10 - 12 RPM. I have not had any bearing problems in about 30 years of using the mill. I will be taking it apart this year and more than likely re-doing the bearings that need work. Most of my bearings are brass.
Good Luck with your mill. As you know, you can change the gear ratio by changing the gears on the mill and drive unit.

I was wondering if ya'll had an opinion on chain and sprocket sizes for converting a Chattanooga 13 to engine powered. The southernmatters web site says to use a 100 size chains, but I went to a industrial supply store to look at some and they are huge. It just seems like overkill.
