[Syrupmakers] Feeding Cane in mill

An additional reason is that some cane is prone to break off at the joints as it goes through the mill. This breakage is minimized if the cane is fed large end first.

Jay,
Feeding the large end of the cane stalks keeps the mill from getting overfed(and possible break the mill). If you put all the stalks you can in large end first, the cane gets smaller as it progresses the grinding process and there is less strain on the mill. On the other hand, if you feed all the stalks you can into the mill with the small end first, the cane gets larger as the grinding progresses and could choke or break the mill. If you feed the small end first, you would need to be rather careful not to overfeed. This probably applies to sugarcane even more so than sorghum. Hope this helps.

Hello,On my Chatt. 12 it says to feed cane with the largeend foremost. It seems to me that you should startwith the small end first. What would be the reasoningfor feeding it with the large end first?Thanks,JayJay____________________________________________________________________________________Looking for last minute shopping deals?
