This year I had Dale, but the cane in the picture was Topper 76. That was
from 2006. The bottom I grow it in has a spring under it. The owner's
father in law put drain tile in it about 40 years ago so the whole field
keeps moisture in it even during the worst droughts.

I use an old ground driven corn binder to cut my sorghum. A friend of mine
uses a pto driven John Deere corn binder for his. We both are small
operations. Works great, you just walk behind and pick up the bundles and
throw them on the wagon, then cut the heads with a chainsaw.
Here's a link to a picture of mine in operation in 2006.
second link is to my syrup making page, still working on it, though.

Marcus, a few years ago pto driven cane cutters started popping up around
here. A frame is built to house a head and saw blade (saw mill size 36-52
inch in some cases).
Made very much like a bush hog, but offset to cut to the side of the
tractor. Great labor saver but I tend to cut the cane a little higher at
times than I normally would. Also, harder to feed butt ends first (if any
syrupmakers still do that).
Small scale operation, a powerfull weed eater with a saw blade on it saves a
lot of backache. Best way is to have 2 men grabbing arm fulls of cane and
one running the weed eater. BUT watch your toes. Tommy
