  That is the reason I intend to have the large roller grooved.  The mill will work better with it grooved.
   
  I have a lot of round-tuets to do.  I applied for my pinnies last Wednesday, so I should have plenty of time to get to them.  My wife already has more for me to do than I can get to, so I may have to go back to work to get some rest.

With the small rollers grooved, it would seem to me that the cane is being gripped by the feedroller, but allowed to slip by the smooth top roller. The first roller is gripping the cane and trying to push it past the smooth big roller-- when the big roller needs to do some pulling, too... I think it would work better if the big roller were grooved rather than the feed roller.

  I have a #4 Golden New Model Mull Mill.  The large roller is slick.  The 2 small rollers have good grooves.  The mill will not take more than 2 large stalks of cane at a time,  If you try to put more than that in the mill at one time, it will start to slip, causing the mill to shake and the cane will not go through the mill as it should.  That can and will cause the cast gears to break.
   
  I have a horz. power mill that I plan to go through and replace bearings as needed that has like new grooves.  I really like the Golden Mull Mill and will leave it installed for a back up after I start to use the power mill this fall.
   
  My advice would be to have the roller re-grooved as I intend to do with my Mull Mill, and not take a chance of breaking something that is next to imposable to replace.  
   
  Just my .02 cents worth.
