[Syrupmakers] cane virus

Over the years I can't remember a year where we have not had some of the
sprouting on a few stalks. I certainly would not say it is not a virus,
however with our cane it does not appear on the same root stock in different
years, so that would seem to remove disease possibility. I do know that we
always grind it with the suckers and it does not seem to change the quality
of syrup.

My cane has not seen any pesticides or herbicides of any kind and it is
straight as cane be, looking great except for a couple "sprouts" 1/3 up a
stalk or two which I noticed after JT and Richard first spoke of it. It is
irrigated and very healthy. While I am no expert, I just find it hard to
believe the virus thing or anything that would cause a problem with using
the cane although it does not appear to be normal. Thought for sure someone
else may have had some more exact info on the subject. Heck, if no one on
this list does, then who else in the US would? We have an awful lot of
experience here!
