[Syrupmakers] cane virus

My cane has not seen any pesticides or herbicides of any kind and it is straight as cane be, looking great except for a couple “sprouts” 1/3 up a stalk or two which I noticed after JT and Richard first spoke of it. It is irrigated and very healthy. While I am no expert, I just find it hard to believe the virus thing or anything that would cause a problem with using the cane although it does not appear to be normal. Thought for sure someone else may have had some more exact info on the subject. Heck, if no one on this list does, then who else in the US would? We have an awful lot of experience here!

That sounds more like it. I had some very strong straight line winds (strongest I've ever seen) a week or two before I noticed the sprouts.

I called the Houma USDA on this subject earlier today. I couldn’t reach my normal contact, but the person I spoke to said he’d only seen above ground sprouting when the stalk had been stressed, typically by ‘getting a whiff’ of Round-up or from strong winds knocking it over…basically, anything that stunts the normal growth of the stalk can cause this to occur. He wasn’t aware of any viruses as a root cause, however.
If anyone has any detailed information on possible virus causes, please let me know and I’ll track it down.

Ken,
I posted what little I knew for J T a few days ago. I would ask one on the LA sugarcane experts what they think. Ask Tracy Baudoin who to contact at LSU or Houma to ask.

J.T.,
I would like to know that answer also along with my questions. Richard, you posted here today. Do you have any input? I did do a google search but it turned up other things for virus issues.
Thanks,
Ken R

Hey I'm the one that posted that a week or so ago. It sound like the same thing that I have.
I have another question though. Can I remove the sprout and then squeeze the cane this fall?

Hello,
I think I noticed an earlier post about sugar cane eyes sprouting above ground off the stalk and this being a virus. I noticed today that some of my stalks have eyes sprouting out about midstalk. Is this what was mentioned and is this not edible cane? What harm does this do if it is a virus? Does this stalk need to be destroyed or roots and all adjacent stalks too?
Thanks for anymore input on this issue.
