[Syrupmakers] cane virus

I called the Houma USDA on this subject earlier today.  I couldn't reach
my normal contact, but the person I spoke to said he'd only seen above
ground sprouting when the stalk had been stressed, typically by 'getting
a whiff' of Round-up or from strong winds knocking it over...basically,
anything that stunts the normal growth of the stalk can cause this to
occur.  He wasn't aware of any viruses as a root cause, however.

 

If anyone has any detailed information on possible virus causes, please
let me know and I'll track it down.

Ken,

    I posted what little I knew for J T a few days ago. I would ask one
on the LA sugarcane experts what they think. Ask Tracy Baudoin who to
contact at LSU or Houma to ask.

Hey I'm the one that posted that a week or so ago. It sound like the
same thing that I have.

 

I have another question though. Can I remove the sprout and then squeeze
the cane this fall?
