[Syrupmakers] seed cane

J T,
You are welcome to come visit the cane patch anytime you want. I have over 100 varieties on trial--maybe a dozen or so in quantities to sell. Last year I got 40 cents a stalk for seedcane. This year fertilizer went up tremendously and fuel, too. So I increased my price by 25%. Some folks sell for more, some less. Some people give it away. I put too much in it to give it away. I drip irrigate, fertilize and use a weedeater on about 2 acres.
The cane may not be quite as large this year because I used cottonseed meal on most of it. I had some calls for organically grown, so decided to try the cottonseed meal for 1 year, anyway. It should have about the same number of eyes on it as more fertilizer primarily increases the joint length and diameter.
By the way, Poplarville is a government experiment station--so they aren't really in the cane business commercially. Thay could give it away if they wanted to(like the Quincy, Florida experiment station does-- they just limit quantities and have 1 day when the cane is available.
Let me know in advance if you's like to come look at the cane patch, J T.

I just don't want to pick up any diseases. I'm going to some new land this year and would like to start with some good clean seed cane. The cane I bought last year has a lot of those sprouts coming out the side of the stalk. ya'll said it was virus. And it just doesn't look good all  around to me.
As far as variety, I'm not real sure I was gonna try 2-3 different kinds. I probably need to just come down and spend a day with you, Richard, you could probably tell/show me what I need to know to pick a variety.
Another thing is that Poplarville sold there cane for $.35 a stalk.

If I had time to plan the trip, I could drive a day or so from Poplarville.

J T,
I have a customer returning from Jackson, MS this year. He got over 500 stalks of GA Yellow Gal last year and wants more this year. Maybe you could pool ship with him. Contact me offline and I can give you info to contact him with.
I have most of the varieties that Poplarville has and more. 50 cents/stalk.

I just talked to the lab in Poparville, MS. They said they aren't gonna have any seed cane for sell this year. Were is the next closest place to get good pure bred seed cane?
