I don't know about syrupmakers in that area (and  I'm NOT one!) ... but
they always make syrup at the Shelby Iron Works  Festival every fall.
That is near Columbiana, probably about 1.5 hours from  Tuscaloosa.  I
found this page with some pictures from 2002:

and their website seems to  be:

but it doesn't have  this year's dates.  The organizers sometimes read
this list, so maybe  they can post the dates for this year!?  From past
dates I can find,  it seems to be the 2nd weekend in October pretty
often...

They grind  and make syrup both Saturday and Sunday, as long as they have
cane...   and they've made both sorghum and sugar cane syrup in the past
(both last  year?) ... I don't know what they are growing for this  year.
