Gail,

Babbitt is the bearing material used in a lot of old machinery, as well
as cane mills.  Also called "white metal", it is usually some mixture of
lead, tin, antimony, and copper.

Google "babbitt metal" and you will find a lot more information.

For the sake of those of us who haven't a clue what babbitt is, can you enlighten us?
I'm betting that I DO know what it is, but maybe we just call it something else in our neck of the woods.
