[Syrupmakers] Stripping leaves early?

Is there any good reason why it would be necessary to wait until the sorghum
cane heads out before starting to strip the leaves off? Or might it even be
beneficial and send more of the "growth energy" into the stalk, thereby
making the stalks thicker?
I would like to get somewhat of a head start on stripping off leaves so I
don't feel so pressed for time come harvest and if I could start this early,
it would sure save me a lot of mental anguish, LOL!
