We had 10 people helpinig strip, cut and load. Three women made sure the heads were hanging over the side of the wagon just right for chain sawing.

I tried several different ways of topping before I discovered the chainsaw
after on the trailer method. The blade on the weedeater didn't work for 2
reasons. 1) The stalks wanted to 'run away' from the blade and 2) to get
near the right angle, I had to hold the weedeater upside down and up over my
head. This is a little more strain on my back than I like. So I went back
to the trailer method. You don't get all the heads unless you are more
careful and perfect then I am laying it on the trailer/wagon.

T C,
I wonder if you can substitute a weedeater with a blade for the chainsaw
? It may not be quite as fast, but not near as nasty ! Weedeaters don't
need chain oil.

I always cut my cane 7 days before cooking and once kept it six weeks before
cooking. I think you will find that mother nature does a terrific job of
building storage containers , each joint in a stalk is a sealed unit.
I cant remember who said they cut the heads off with a chain saw. I want to
say thanks. We cut and loaded our cane on a hay wagon then chain sawed off
he heads it worked great, much easier than using loppers like we have been
doing.
We are going to cook two batches one next Saturday and one on the following
Saturday.
Hope you all make good syrup

Since there has been some talk about sorghum cutting I would like to hear
any comments on a couple of questions.
1. How long could/should you wait after cutting cane before cooking sorghum?
2. How long can you leave stripped and topped cane standing before cutting.
On the first question I have seen the advantages of letting the cane sit for
three or four days before cooking. However, I have never let any sit for 10
days. It would be an advantage for my situation if I could let it sit for
seven days before cooking without any damage. The same would be true on the
second question if you can leave stripped cane standing for a day or two
without losing any sugar or flavor.
