[Syrupmakers] Cane looks like it is bleeding!

Sounds like red rot to me, too. It occurs in sugarcane as well. It usually enters through a crack and is bad about getting into cane that lays on the ground especially. It makes the juice taste spoiled in that area--so you don't want much of it in your juice to make syrup--or it WILL affect the taste of the syrup, if there is enough of it. I try to avoid it some--when practical, of course. You can't avoid it entirely though.

That sounds like Red Rot to me. It attacks the stalk in splotches near the ground. It makes the stalks weaker and more likely to fall in a wind ( lodge ). It also attacks Johnson grass and other plants in the cane family. All canes that I have seen have a little red splotching. The better canes like Dale are resistant. A little won’t affect the syrup. I do not have any experience with a bad infestation of Red Rot. I suspect it would make the syrup darker. It can go through to the white pulp of the stalk and turn it red.

Hello all, I am new to the list. May dad planted some sorghum cane last year and he planted some more this year, twice as much. It made some great syrup. Anyway, we are stripping it and some of the canes are split and it looks like blood almost that runs out . I was wondering if anyone knows what this is or what causes it?

  Thanks
  Steve
