[Syrupmakers] "red" stuff

Tracy,

We looked real close for borers and did not find any at all. A few stalks I
cut into had a red ring inside but only at the very top of the stalk. Other
than that the cane looked good. We did have some blow down with one variety
but it is still growing.

Sure was hoping to make the cooking on the 10th but that is but my wife's
Girl Scout group is marching in the Veterans Day parade here. Might have to
support her with that.

Ken,

If it's only on the leaves, it's probably rust (no relation to iron
oxide;-). It's a disease that also affects johnson grass. It doesn't
really harm the cane, other than causing stress to the plant. A severe case
could potentially kill the stalk, though.no known cure. The USDA does
variety selection based on the hardiness against rust, among ten's of other
things.

If it's in the stalk itself, it's probably red-rot.This usually occurs when
borers make a hole in the cane and it starts to decay. It can also occur
around splits, or any other break in the skin.

I'm sure there are more technical explanations out there, and I welcome the
more scientific rebuttle;-)

Tracy

Hi all,

I was down at my uncle's place in Louisiana this past weekend and we noticed
something on his cane. He has two unknown varieties and they both had this.
There was something red on the inside of the leaves running down to the eye.
When you stripped a stalk, it was then visible. I know this is kind of vague
but someone may have some though on it.

Thank You ,

Ken Reitsma
