Ken,
A few varieties have red color on the leaf sheaf even on the outside. I think it is "normal". It's just on certain varieties. 1 is NG 28-55, for example. It can actual be a "marker" for identifying some varieties.

                Hi all,

I was down at my uncle’s place in Louisiana this past weekend and we noticed something on his cane. He has two unknown varieties and they both had this. There was something red on the inside of the leaves running down to the eye. When you stripped a stalk, it was then visible. I know this is kind of vague but someone may have some though on it.

  Thank You ,
  Ken Reitsma
