Russell,
Do I ever! WATCH THE VIDEO IN THE LINK BELOW! The video in the link
shows a Cameco harvester (Cameco was bought by John Deere in the late
90's). This is a 2-row harvester that cuts and tops the cane and lays
it in the row in any configuration you like behind the machine...not a
hobbyist's tool, by any means! This monster will literally cut a ton of
cane in under 60 secs.

Cameco's plant (now John Deere) is located in Thibodaux, LA. They build
mostly sugarcane equipment (harvesters, loaders, 10-16 ton side-dump
trailers, road levelers, back-hoes, etc.) They've been around since the
mid 50's. I've even bought one of their loaders from around 1970, built
on an International 856 tractor frame. This thing is a monster as well,
but it has to be in order to keep up with their harvesters.
The problem I have is that none of the old farmers want to sell these
old tools because John Deere has switched to only making the billet
harvester (cuts the stalk into 8-12in. pieces and blows off the leaves).
This is better for the sugar mills since they don't get as much trash in
the load, but worse for us roller mill folks. The commercial farmers
prefer the whole stalk cutters for planting purposes, since it doesn't
waste as much cane and produces a more consistant stand of cane.

(in part):
Also, in case anyone is interested in making a cane hobby into a
job, there are a few farmers going out of business, selling harvesters
in the $30K and up range (10-15 yrs old). I'm still looking for that
$5k-$10k 'project' harvester
Do youhave an URL or something so a machete-wielder can see what a real
cane harvester looks like?
