  Subject: [Syrupmakers] Making Sorghum

Last Saturday I finished storing away all the sorghum making equipment. In a way it was a sad time, the end of something I had anticipated for a whole year. I was also glad it was over, I was wore down to a nubbin.

I made a 23 minuet video that turned out real well. The only thing I didn't get that I regret is Old Bud jumping up in to the back of his pickup truck ( he is 91 years old ).

We made 3 batches this year. The cane was tall and large diameter. I didn't really want to do the third batch but old Bud and Bob said " we can't let it go to waste. On Saturday we only had 18 people because of THE football game Kansas vs Kansas state. We decided to make the third batch on Monday. Bud and bob said they would be here, with their wives that made 5 people, not enough for a full crew. Monday morning came and 14 people showed up, we had plenty of help. I grilled hamburgers an some of the ladies brought covered dishes so we had a fine lunch. The last two batches I turned the cooking over to Old Bud, he has a lot more patience than I do, he made some fine syrup.

They all wanted to help me store the equipment but I told them I was to tired that I had all winter to store it. Bud came to town Thursday and helped me store the equipment. The 1935 F20 farmall was the last thing I Put in the barn. It started with the second crank ( hand crank ). What a sound, I love to hear that old tractor run.

It is really something to get to drive an old tractor like this one. I found that time is a relevant thing. The F 20 road speed is 5 MPH, that was fast in 1935 as compared to looking at a horses butt all day long. I am sure the farmers at that time thought they were in heaven while driving a F 20 Farmall.

I set here looking out at what was my sorhum patch, it is plowed up for next year awaiting planting time.

  It ws a fun time
