I kill the fire, take up the syrup, and fill mine with water just as quickly
as I can. I let this cool down for 24 hours, empty the kettle and finish
cleaning it, then wipe it dry.
Hope this helps. One would think that filling the kettle with cold water
would crack it, but so far so good.
