Bill,
The "straw cutter" looks to me like could cut the tops off sorghum perhaps. I know they normally do that in the field. Did you get any of the rain in Ken's forecast last night. We got a trace. Still need a good rain badly.

I had photos of another old tool sent my way recently, but from
Missouri. I probably should have sent it to the list, which is sort
of quiet right now.
Our soil moisture in south Georgia is looking better, but here to the
north of Tallahassee water tables are lower than I ever imagined that
they could be. It has really hurt my cane. I'd love to get some
rain over the next few days and a temperature drop, too. . . . a bit
off topic, but my mushrooms need a stimulus to "fruit." A few
shiitakes have stumbled out of some logs I have a warm-weather strain
in, but I am really eager to see if my efforts with the king oyster
will pay off. Regular oysters are so easy that a dummy like I has luck.
Some things don't change. My little dog killed another cottonmouth
9/28, the largest yet, about 30 feet from my cane patch. She's
killed several in this little area and within this 100 ft stretch is
where she has been bitten by a cottonmouth and a rattlesnake. I've
just reconciled myself to losing her this way, but you wouldn't
believe her self-esteem over the last few days. She's been strutting
her stuff.
Best wishes to all, and I'd love to read posts of syrupmaking
. They're really inspirational to us further south who are gearing up.
