Good morning Syrupmakers,
Thanks for an interesting discussion of ribbon sugar cane. I'm not sure I
have anything to add to the discussion, but appreciate your input. When I began
growing cane I searched for some ribbon because that's what Dad had when I
was a boy, and my, that was a long time ago! I didn't realize until I began
looking that there were so many varieties called "ribbon" or "striped."
So, I'll make a couple of elementary observations.
1. All of us may be actually talking about a striped variety of some kind.
In the 23 single-spaced pages of cane varieties from the Agricultural Research
Service, National Plant Germplasm System, Miami, FL , there are at least 6
varieties listed as striped. How many others there are not so identified, I
have no idea. I'm sure that scattered across the southern sugar cane growing
belt there are several varieties of a "ribbon" or striped sugar cane.
2. The stalk that Bill had with no stripes could still be a variety of
ribbon cane. In my patch of ribbon cane all along there would be several stalks in
a hill with no ribbons. Others in the hill would have ribbons. Why, an
accident of nature I guess.
One additional thought on ribbon cane. I wish it had better standing
qualities. This year, without a lot of rough weather, I did get some straight
stalks, but most of the time they look like cork screws.
You may want to go to http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/acc/acc_queries.html for
additional study.
Have great day everyone.
Don
