Hello Syrup-Makers,

On Monday, November 6, the North Florida Research and Education Center at
Quincy, FL held its annual Cane Give-Away day. I found this year's event to be
helpful and a lot of fun. It was good to see some old friends again, hear some
helpful information and secure some new varieties of sugar cane. I deeply
appreciate the Research Center making this available to us each year.

And, while unexpected, I also appreciated the opportunity I had to say
something about the Southern Syrup-Makers' Association. We have 40 members now, and
are already getting dues being paid for 2007.

I really needed the lecture on grass and weed control, and I need to hear it
and hear it again. This is one of the great battles I fight on my farm each
year.

One thing I wish we could have, and that is a description of each new variety
other than "syrup cane" and "chewing cane." Is it a soft or brittle chewing
cane? Does it stand well in the wind? Does it come back from stubble well?
Is it frost tolerant?

This is not to minimize what the Center is doing for us, which is deeply
appreciated. I wish all you syrup-makers could have been there. John, our son,
and I got about ten stalks of seven varieties. Now I can hardly wait until
spring to get them going.

Happy cooking to all you Syrup-makers.

                   Don
