[Syrupmakers] Cane Mills

Lloyd,
My horizontal mill's top roller is between 9 and 10"(depends if you
count the lip on either end) wide and about 9" in diameter. I run mine
with a 5hp (220v single phase 1720rpm) electric motor with no problem.
I have a 25:1 gear reducer along with the standard 2-shaft gear
reduction on the mill. This turns my top roller between 6-8 linear feet
per minute. I've never really measured it, but this is what it appears
to be...I may grind tonight, so I'll let you know.
Regarding feed rate, I've stuffed the mouth of the mill full with some
loading of the motor occuring, but nothing major. The mouth is about 7"
wide and 2.5" tall. The cane I normally use are the typical commercial
varieties and even a few historical ones. These are typically 3/4" to
1-1/4" in diameter and are extremely hard.
As a side note, This year's been one of my easiest to date! The mill,
conveyor and boiler are all working flawlessly (knock on wood!) and I
couldn't ask for a better crop, despite the draught earlier in the
year...I only wish I'd had more time to plant...I'm still hoping to get
some 226, but time's been against me...regualar job and all that;-(
I Hope everyone's having at least as good a season, if not better!

I measured the rollers the top roller is 10" wide and 9" in
diamature.
I would like input from any one who uses a horzintal mill about this
size,
how many stalks at time do you feed in it a time and what size the
stalks
are.
