Good morning Syrup-Makers,
I've had several contacts about seed cane for next year, and unfortunately,
the dry weather ruined my crop this year. However, I found a source in which
some of you might be interested. My ribbon and Government Improved Green with
prickles did not thrive at all this year, and I wanted to re-establish these
two canes. So, I called on my long-time friend and fellow retired United
Methodist Preacher, George Scarborough, of Slocomb, AL.
George has some of the finest cane I've seen this year. He kept it watered
during the dry season, and it is fine. He has a deep purple cane, ribbon cane,
and the green with prickles, and I purchased 100 stalks of each variety. He
gets 25 cents per stalk. So, if any of you need seed cane for next year, I
would recommend George. You may reach him at 334-886-3242. George is also a
bee-keeper of some significance. He said he collected 23 barrels of honey from
the Freeport, FL area. That's significant to me.
Of course, I've said it before and say it again, Richard Harrison of
Marianna, FL always has beautiful cane as well, and an abundance of varieties.
One final reminder. We're not having our Community Day this year, but will
be hosting a Treasure Forest Association group on November 11.
