[Syrupmakers] Kettles

These kettles look like cooking rendering kettles rather than sugar kettles.
We used one similar to these 5 or 6 years ago. It made syrup, but not as
easily as in our sugar kettle. We didn't have a "skimming ring" for it.
I'm not sure how one could be fabricated for this type of kettle. Also, the
ratio of width to depth is much lower. This means that there is less
surface area per gallon for evaporation. Our experience is that it took
much longer to cook with this type of kettle.

Has anyone purchased a kettle from Agri-Supply (ASC); www.Agri-Supply.com
? I just received a catalog, and they show a 65gal pot for $249.95 ($331.95
online) and a 90gal pot for $349.95 ($443.95 online). The 65gal is 1/2in.
thick and the 90gal is 3/4in. thick. I just received the catalog, so it's
up to date. I can't see the curve of the lip in the pics too well, so I'm
not sure if it would work for boiling syrup.

My question is, is this a good pot? The price seems too good to be true,
even if it's a little thicker than the antique ones! Of course you have to
call for shipping rates, which could eat up a large chunk of cash.

  Thanks,

  P.S., They also have 10, 15 and 20 gal pots (54.95, 74.95 and 84.95) for
anyone interested in making cracklin's, jambalyaya's, etc.!....Cook it
up!;-)
