Subject: [Gristmillers] Found: Chatanooga Cane Mill
Hey guys;
I was out wandering around a piece of land next to a Wendy's here in
town
where I knew some old rusted out equipment to be. I hadn't been by there
in
years and was just curious as to whether or not any of that old stuff
was
still there. Sure enough, most of it was and most all of it in pretty
bad
shape. However, as I was walking along the edge of the property (about 5
feet from the curb of a major 5 lane highway), I spotted something oddly
familiar. I went over to get a closer look and sure enough, it was a
cane
mill. All I could manage to see was that it is a Chatanooga Plow Co.
mill
and the receiver at the top for the wooden horse pole to attach to was
only
sloped to one side so I'm assuming it was a one horse mill. You can tell
I
obviously know a lot about this subject. Looking at Bill Outlaw's site,
It
seems like the Chatanoogas are fairly common. However, since I have no
iterest in cane mills, i'm going to try and talk to the landowner and
see if
i can get the mill and sell it to anyone here on the list that may be
interested. I have no idea what the value of such a mill is but I do
know
there are people on the board here who collect them and so I wanted to
try
and get it for their interests. Maybe someday somebody will return the
favor
to me with an old corn grinder or sheller. Anyways, I'll try and get
with
the owners today and try to get some pictures to send back to the list
this
afternoon. Anybody have an approximate value for one of these old
things?
