My uncle used to do it the way Sam is suggesting to run his saw mill. Looks a little "iffy" to me ,though.

Very dangerous consideration when it comes to jacking the tractor off the
ground and placing in gear. You can obtain the same result by buying an old
tractor without the wheels or engine of a tractor. Can be easily done for
less than 500.00 without the danger of have a tractor in gear with wheels.

Subject: [Syrupmakers] changes

Hey guys.
I am serioulsy considering making drastic changes to my mill.
I want to turn down the shafts on all three rollers, to fit pillow block
ball bearings.
Set the rollers sideways between two sheets of steel, set spacing, and set
pillow blocks.
Put a PTO adapter on the long drive shaft, and hook it up to the rear drive
wheel of a tractor.
Jack the tractor up off the ground, put in gear, should achieve one or two
RPM, or more.
What you think?????
